We are
Changing Lives One Tool at a Time
while building skills for people of every ability level
DoodleBug Workshop is special and unique! We offer a weekly vocational program that teaches men and women 16 years and older with special needs how to use tools to create beautiful and functional products for home and garden from wood, resin and other materials. We also have groups who come for a one-day outing. Either way, DoodleBug Workshop is a great resource to build skills and provide a social outlet for people with special needs.
Weekly
Vocational Program
Vocational participants come for weekly classes to create the products that are sold in the workshop store. Participants receive instruction based on ability level and are evaluated regularly. The classes are also a great place to bond with others as everyone experiences the joy of creating unusual and fun products in a convivial atmosphere.
Under the guidance of experienced woodworkers, participants learn to use a variety of hand and power tools, creating the component parts that are the makings of DoodleBug products. Others do Finishing work in assembly-line fashion and learn to paint, glue and assemble. Participants learn to work with a team, learning concentration, how to follow directions, complete a task and how to ask for help. Participants are challenged to reach their full potential.
Workshop participants also learn patience, discipline and appropriate social behaviors in addition to practical skills. They make new connections with other participants, with volunteers who help in the workshop, and with visitors who come for special events or to shop at the Workshop store.
During warm weather months, participants participate in the Giving Garden – growing produce that is donated to the local food pantry.
DoodleBug Workshop exists to help integrate men and women with special needs into the life of the community by showcasing what they are able to achieve in the workshop. Visitors regularly tour the workshop during community events like the special “Walks” in downtown Wheaton and admire and purchase the various products on display in the shop. DoodleBug participants also get involved in community events and initiatives as part of the DoodleBug team.

Day/Transition Program One-Time Outings
Do you have a Day or Transition Program that is looking for a Community Day outing? DoodleBug is a perfect solution. We offer a chance for social development and an opportunity for your participants to learn use of basic tools (drill, screwdriver, sanders) and make a product they take home. They can stay for lunch at DoodleBug Workshop or take a stroll with the group to nearby Downtown Wheaton for a picnic.
This is what one high school special education teacher had to say about DoodleBug Workshop:
“We believe in your mission. We believe in developing life-long skills for our learners. We love that your organization is equipping individuals with job skills and real life skills through building connections with others. You have created a wonderful “next step” for so many individuals. Busy minds and busy bodies!”
